Mike Nolen, owner and pilot of Cycle Barn Racing, set the first ever record for a Derringer engine the weekend of April 12-13, 2008 at the AMRA Pennington Seed Nationals in Reynolds, GA. The new 1/8 mile record was set on a 121 cubic inch, high gear, carbeurated Pro Fuel bike. The entire weekend showed very impressive, consistent passes being laid down in the low 7.40's.

The Johnny Vickers/Hawaya Racing, Inc. designed and developed Derringer engine ran a 4.66 in the 1/8 mile for the new AMRA national record. The ongoing association between Nolen and Vickers paid off with the extreme performance of the Derringer, and the experience of rider, Mike Nolen. Nolen and Cycle Barn Racing are very excited to be the first to make the record books for Johnny Vickers and his team at Hawaya Racing.

After several years of gas class racing, Nolen devoted the entire 2007 season to the nitro category while developing the new Blackmer Construction, Mechanical Pipe & Supply sponsored Pro Fuel/Pro Dragster. Winning several events, and having impressionable runner up finishes, the 2007 season closed with an AMRA Pro Fuel class #3 spot nationally, and an AHDRA Pro Dragster class #7 spot nationally. Both Vickers and Nolen had high expectations for the 2008 program.

"Mike, Paul & Sarah are a class act. They brought the dedication, professionalism, and the talent to the Derringer racing engine program that Jerry Gordon and I have been looking for since we started the Derringer project. Now that is starting to pay off, Johnny says."

This national record brings Nolen a total of 32 for his racing career, and he says, "This one rates at the top! I thank Johnny, Steve and Chris at Hawaya Racing for the tremendous efforts and knowledge that went into the development of the Derringer engine. Thanks to my sponsors, Mark Blackmer, Blackmer Construction of Long Beach, MS; Mechanical Pipe & Supply, Nashville, TN, Red Line Oil; and the Cycle Barn Racing team-wife, Sarah, Crew Chief: Paul McGhee, and Blaine Howze. They are the ones that make this happen."

Nolen qualified #3 and finished runner up to Kirby Apathy in the final round of eliminations at the Reynolds event. The enthusiastic Nolen's next stop will be in Nashville, TN, May 17-18, for the AMRA Music City Dragway points race.
