VICKERS FIRST MANUFACTUERS CUP PRO DRAGSTER NATIONAL CHAMPION!
Millers Creek, North Carolina
MANUFACTURES CUP FALL RACE:
Johnny Vickers officially became the first rider to ever win the MFC Pro Dragster National Championship at the Manufactures Cup finals held in Valdosta Georgia on November 9th -10th -11th, 2012. Thirteen riders entered the Royal Purple Lubricants Pro Dragster class presented by Hawaya Racing for their last chance to blast down the quarter mile in the 2012 season. Johnny Vickers qualified in the #1 position running a 7.225. In the first round of eliminations, Vickers ran a new all time low ET of 7.103 seconds taking out Rich Carruthers on the Tennessee Thunder machine and eclipsing his own previous record of 7.128 seconds set a the fall Cup race in 2011. In the second round, Vickers was again victorious over Clint Pleasant 7.222 seconds to Clint’s 7.418 ET. In the finals, Vickers would suffer his first defeat in over a year when the #2 qualifier Kirby Apathy ran an outstanding 7.244 ET against Vickers loosing 7.364 effort. “Kirby really ran a smart race and was able to save his machine for when it counted most, says Johnny. I had hurt my engine a bit in the first round when an O-ring failed on the intake manifold and ran the front cylinder lean. But we did not detect the problem until after round 2. All we had time to do between rounds was replace the O-ring to repair the leak, but didn’t have time to repair the cylinder. I just went with what I had and Kirby had more than me”. In the end I was still able to pull of the Championship for Hawaya Racing.
Over 740 entrants representing at least 7 countries, lined up to do battle at the final race of the year. 6 teams from Europe and 1 team from South Africa made the long trip across the pond to compete in the biggest motorcycle race of the year. Svein Rolfstad, Trond Hoiberget and Jan Hegre from Norway, Rikord Guslafsson and Per Bengtsson from Sweden, Chris Hannam from England and Marius Burger from South Africa all competed. There were many other racers in attendance from Australia and other countries there to see what all the excitement was about.
